IETE FORTNIGHT EVENT #7 – RESUME

Introduction

IETE-SF conducted a seminar on ‘How to make a Resume’ as the fifth event of ‘Fortnight’ on 28th of September. A resume is nothing but a written compilation of your education, work experience, credentials, and accomplishments. Most professional positions require applicants to submit a resume as part of the application process.

The workshop was conducted from 3.30 to 4.30 pm by Prof. Shirley Mathew in the seminar hall with more than 80 students attending the event.

About the Seminar

Prof Shirley began the session by telling the students about the importance of having a presentable Resume and what difference it can make in how a person is perceived. “It is a great advantage for you that you’re learning this right now rather than during your final year. You need to make the most of this opportunity.”, she said. Then, she explained the difference between a CV and a Resume. A CV is detailed and generally runs into 3 to 4 pages while a Resume is short and crisp. She went on to point out the real purpose of a resume, i.e. to obtain an interview (NOT a job), to be used as a marketing tool to sell your skill set, to present the best of you together and most importantly, to provide the interviewer what to ask you in the interview. “It is essential that you carefully reflect upon what you put in your Resume because you will be asked questions based on it.” she said.

After talking about the general purpose of a Resume, she proceeded to explain the exact format in which a Resume has to be framed, explaining every section in detail and sharing certain tips to make it seem more professional. She stressed upon the fact that a Resume should be neat, well organised, error free and professional looking because it says that a person is a tidy person, well organised, pay attention to detail and careful and competent. She used Resume submitted by students during interviews for different committees, for pointing out both DOs and DONTs. Finally she talked about some apps available in play-store that make formatting a Resume easier.

The seminar was very informative and interactive. Students were encouraged to voice their doubts freely and every doubt was answered properly.

A Resume is the first impression of an interviewee. Hence it is very important to have an impressive Resume. However, it is a skill that most people lack and do not take seriously. Hence, IETE-SF took an initiative to educate the students in this regard.
