Q. For our readers, can you tell us about your job profile and elaborate on the industry you are currently working in?
I’m Kushal Shah and I’m currently a Senior Network Planning Engineer at Reliance Jio. I’ve been working with Reliance for the past 3 years and I’m a part of the Network Analytics Team at Reliance.
Q. What are the upcoming domains, technologies and skill sets in the industry that are high in demand right now and expect an even further surge in the coming years?
Something that’s trending currently in the industry is artificial intelligence. A lot of the projects in major industries are based on the concept of artificial intelligence and this is something that is expected to surge in the upcoming years.
Q. How big is the gap between the average quality of engineers in our country and the required level in the industry? What steps can the government and colleges take to reduce this gap?
The major problem that companies face is that the engineers we recruit lack practical knowledge despite being equipped theoretically. So the step that colleges and government can take is provide students with more practical exposure through projects and Internships.
Q. How important are soft skills to become successful in any industry? How do you think colleges can prepare students better and improve this aspect (soft skills)?
Soft skills are something that is required to climb up the ladder in professional organizations. We get a lot of applicants with technical knowledge but what they cannot do is express themselves. What colleges can do is schedule lectures from professional speakers regarding the same.
Q. What advice would you like to give to an engineer who is in the first or second year of his/her course?
Time management is the key to doing a lot of things. As a lot of things can be done along with Engineering to develop one’s personality. My advice would be to explore as much as you can throughout the 4 years and know what your interests are.
